SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol that is used to connect to a web server and carry out various tasks using a command line. The protocol is used by many expert users, due to the fact that the data transmitted over it is encrypted, so it may not be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access may be used for a variety of things depending on the type of website hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for instance, SSH is among the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file in case the hosting server allows it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH may be used for pretty much anything - you could install software or restart specific services including the web server or the database server which run on the machine. SSH is used largely with UNIX-like Systems, but there are clients that allow you to use the protocol if your laptop or computer is using a different Operating System too. The connection is made on TCP port 22 by default and the remote server always listens for incoming connections on that port even though a number of service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Hosting

In case you have a hosting account with us and you'd like to manage your content remotely through SSH, you can get SSH access to the account via your Hepsia Control Panel. If your package deal does not come with this feature by default, you may add it with several clicks via the Upgrades menu. In the SSH section of the Control Panel, you'll see the host, the port number and the username that you should use when you connect to the account. You may also select what password you would like to use, as it does not have to be the same as the one for your account. We have prepared a lot of Help articles where you may find all the commands that you'll be able to use with a shared hosting package, as well as examples of how they are used. Also, if SSH access is allowed for your account, you will be able to establish a Secure FTP (SFTP) connection by using a standard client like FileZilla, for example.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is included by default with some of our semi-dedicated server plans, while with others you can easily include it via the hosting Control Panel if needed - even only for the current month. In either case, you could activate and de-activate the function with only one mouse click via the SSH section of the CP. In the same location, you'll see the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box where you could type in the password you want to use, because it does not have to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you can also change it as frequently as you require. A full list of the commands that can be performed in a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, together with the syntax and a number of instances. An extra feature after SSH access is allowed will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client which supports this kind of connections.
